Will be traveling to West Virginia from New York, some 13hours. Any tibits of advice concerning food cars, etc. Will be traveling by Train soon. Any advice?
Food on Amtrak is obviously going to be overpriced. Bland too if you have very discriminating taste as it's mostly pre-packaged stuff. I would pack my own food - something you can eat with your hands and that won't spoil easily. My experience with Amtrak has been that they keep the a/c on fairly strong so something like an egg salad won't spoil right away, but I wouldn't do it anyway. Also they don't have restrictions on how many carry-on bags you can bring so feel free to pack a cooler or a blanket/pillow. Also bring plenty of bottled water. There's nothing to allow you to heat something up however. I also wouldn't count on there being enough time to get food from the train station if the train makes an extended layover in any city, but there's usually enough time to take a couple of smokes if it's an outdoor station platform. I think only in business class or Acela are you guaranteed to have plugs to recharge electronics so bring extra batteries too.
