In the deserts, Palo Verde is a great tree. It stays green and then grows yellow flowers in Spring. It's also uses very little water.
pine, spruce or cedar trees all come to mind when you want something that will stay green. cedar grow in some unusual shapes, so if you want something that will be straight it is not a good choice.
Mondale Pines, Chinese Elm, apple trees, mulberry, mesquite, Arborvitae or just about any evergreen (Check with your local Univ. cooperative extention of Master Gardeners for your particular area). Be sure to get planting instructions, it is very important you prepare the soil.
Stay away from ';willows';, or non native trees. Palm trees are not good if you have a freeze.
